How to use MSI Afterburner to overclock GPU?

MSI Afterburner is a pretty easy to use GPU overclocker, you guessed it, MSI. The software was originally only intended to work with MSI cards, but is now configured to support virtually all GPUs.

This really opens up a lot of possibilities for users who want to get the most out of the performance of their equipment. In this article we will discuss how you can use the MSI Afterburner to successfully overclock your GPU.

Remember that overclocking a component is a risky activity and you risk irreversibly damaging the component you have chosen to overclock if something goes wrong. This is especially true for laptops, where the thermal space is much smaller.

That’s where we start.

Before we start overclocking our card, we need to know the basic performance of our card. To measure it, we use the MSI Kombuster, another handy tool from MSI that works together with the afterburner to help test the GPU.

Step one: Open the MSI afterburner and click on the K icon at the top. This starts the burner.

If the K symbol is gray for you. You need to download and install MSI Kombuster.

Step two: Click on the reference set that corresponds to the resolution you are using. In my case, I will click the Benchmark – Preset: 1080 button to start the test.

Fill it in and write down the dots. You can use it later to see how much strength you’ve gained.

Step three: Now that we know how our card behaves on the base clock, it’s time to start overclocking. You must first set the power and temperature limit sliders to the maximum value.

This makes your card more energy efficient and allows it to reach higher temperatures. Don’t be surprised if you see absurd GPU temperatures.

If you use a laptop or have an older graphics processor, these sliders are probably gray. In this case, proceed to the next step.

Step four: Now let the Combuster run in the background and keep raising the middle clock slide in small steps. Approximately 25-30 MHz each.

If you rotate Kombuster in the background, you can watch out for possible malfunctions, stuttering or delays.

Move the cursor up until there are no more problems with the images. This is the maximum limit your central clock can go to.

Step five: Then we repeat this process with the memory clock cursor. Outside this period the increases are quite large, about 50-70 MHz per step.

Move the cursor until you have problems with the images. At this point, you have essentially reached the absolute limit of what your card can do.

Step six: At this point, you should test these settings over a long period of time to ensure that everything is stable and that no random failures occur.

Try to spin Kombuster for 10-15 minutes or play an intensive game on the higher settings for a while. You can also compare the points obtained in step 2 to measure the importance of the performance gain.

Step seven: When you are satisfied with the settings, you can save them as a profile by clicking on the disk icon at the bottom.

This way you can overclock the card to get the best performance from your hardware. Again: Overclocking is a risky activity, and we recommend that you adhere to the absolute limits of the card, not only for better stability, but also to avoid irreversible damage.
